Community@Maisha!

The Maisha Community Clubs program is a community outreach initiative which seeks to foster and promote wholesome recreation as a vehicle for community transformation and growth. Targeted mainly at youth aged between 12 and 23 who reside within the community around us, the program offers young people a chance to participate in diverse and varied activities on a regular basis, whilst acquiring beneficial life skills as they do. It provides the youth a fun and friendly atmosphere within which to identify, nurture and develop their individual God-given talents, which might otherwise go undetected and hence unexploited.

Through the program, youth are introduced to a variety of leisure and recreational activities in a safe, controlled environment, and are trained in these activities by qualified, skilled trainers. In addition to the leisure activities, the youth are mentored, nurtured and imparted with life skills through motivational talks. Furthermore, the program fosters a sense of entrepreneurship among the participating youth, who are given opportunity to identify and incubate ideas for income-generating activities they can engage in. The program is free of charge for registered and qualifying youth, and currently runs at the Maisha Centre every Saturday morning between 9:00am and midday.

As reflected in the program slogan “Community Transformation Through Recreation and Sports!”, the overall objective is to positively impact the youth in the community around us by promoting regular participation in wholesome recreational activity.

The specific objectives are:

  • To develop model youth capable of causing positive transformation within their community
  • To promote and foster healthy living and fitness as a lifestyle among the youth within the community
  • To facilitate and encourage youth to identify and develop their God-given skills and talents
  • To promote and build a sense of community and social cohesion especially among the youth
  • To introduce youth to a variety of wholesome sports and recreational activities as an alternative to engaging in other non-beneficial pastimes that may be detrimental to the community as a whole.

The Maisha Community Clubs program offers a variety of leisure and recreational activities. These include but are not limited to the following categories:

  • Mind and strategy board games (chess, checkers, scrabble, etc.)
  • Field and court games (soccer, basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton, table tennis, etc.)
  • Music and performing arts (guitar, piano, dance, drama, etc.)
